Clutter & Organizing I can't tell you what a difference this work has already made in our lives" (MS, Wellesly, MA) We spend, on average, 80% of our time indoors at home and at work. The condition of these spaces has an enormous impact on our physical and mental health. All aspects of our lives are affected by the state of our surroundings: our productivity, our outlook, our relationships with other people at work and at home. A well organized environment is one in which we can live, work and relax comfortably, with a functional and aesthetic balance of structure and space. Clutter Clutter drains us physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually and financially. It creates stress which holds us back from living and working freely. Clutter often creates, among other things, confusion, embarrassment, shame, fatigue, weight gain and a sense of being constantly overwhelmed. Literally and figuratively ... it's a drag. The Good News The very good news is that organizing the areas of our spaces that have gotten out of hand can get us back on track and give us a sense of balance and functionality at home and at work. Kids'rooms, attics, basements, garages, home offices, office buildings - clearing the clutter and re-organizing in and all of these spaces is an investment that will bring a huge relief, sense of focus, increased efficiency, and more energy, time and resources. before: office, cambridge, massachusetts after : office, cambridge, massachusetts ![]() Is It Worth the Time? Perhaps you are wondering if making the investment to organize your life is worth the time and resources it will take, but consider for a minute what your disorganization is costing you. Here are some statistics collected by Julie Morgenstern in Organizing from the Inside Out: • Americans waste nine million hours per day searching for misplaced items, according to the American Demographics Society. • The Wall Street Journal reported that the average U.S. executive wastes six weeks per year searching for missing information in messy desks and files. (That translates to just one hour per day!) • Cleaning professionals say that getting rid of excess clutter would eliminate 40 percent of the housework in an average home (National Soap and Detergent Association). • Crisis” purchases related to disorganization could cost as much as 15 to 20 percent of your annual budget—buying duplicates of misplaced or broken items, last-minute shopping at premium prices, an unnecessary interest, rush, nd finance charges on late payments. • Realtors regard “first impression” improvements such as decluttering closets to be one of the smartest ways to speed the sale of a home and fetch a better price, according to the New York State Association of Realtors. "Thankyou so much for transforming my family room. When you arrived it was acluttered, poorly organized multi-purpose space for TV watching andchild play. When you left, one half of the room was a cozy den focusedaround the fireplace, and the other half an improved, larger and morewelcoming kidspace. My 4-year old son did some somersaults when he sawthe new layout! ... ... I found you to be so thoughtful about re-designing thespace, and incredibly easy to work with. Thank you for coming into myhouse and listening carefully to my goals, concerns, frustrations...andthen thoughtfully and gently helping me to see the space in a whole newlight. In just 4 hours, we accomplished amazing things."
